In January at the annual Consumer Electronics Show, Toshiba grabbed a lot of headlines with its autostereoscopic (glasses-free) 3D TV. The company is still talking about that TV nine months later, but the 3D TVs they’re actually selling fall into the passive glasses category.

This one in particular is a 47-inch unit with a very slim design and a full suite of video and networking features. It’s an edge-lit LED LCD TV with some local dimming, which helps improve black levels. It includes four HDMI ports, plus the standard assortment of analog inputs. There’s also a USB port for connecting thumb drives and such.

As stated previously, it’s a passive 3D TV, which means that it puts most of the 3D technology in the LCD panel rather than in the glasses. The passive glasses are similar to the ones you’ll get in most commercial theaters, and in fact the glasses you snuck out of the theater will work with this TV. This method has some pros and cons which I’ll get into later.

September 23, 2011 | by EH StaffStreaming has become one of the buzzwords in modern home theater, offering consumers the ability to access directly on the TV a vast array of new and favorite music, video or still photos, either across the worldwide web or locally on the home computer. As always, there’s a lot to be said for the comfort and convenience of doing it all right from the couch, remote in hand, without fumbling with physical media.

Streaming devices go by many names, and there are a hundred different brands offering onramps to streaming content. There’s even a fair chance you have a networked or smart component and don’t even know it. Most Blu-ray players, as well as many HDTVs are already set up for streaming content. You just need to take a few simple steps to get them set up.

The receiver is an essential part of any audio/video or home theater system, yet its basic functions (switching sources and piping audio signals out to your speakers) are increasingly getting boiled down to simpler products like soundbars. For people who choose the later solution in their homes, I want to make something very clear: you’re missing out. And all the fun packed in this Onkyo HT-RC370 is among the things you’re missing.

Smart TVs (also called connected TVs) are able to access a wide variety of content and services from the Internet. A smart TV can easily increase the amount of media you use without greatly increasing your costs. Like smart phones, many of the apps for smart TVs are free or they require subscription fees you may already be paying (such as Netflix). All the major TV manufacturers now offer smart TVs and not only on their premium models.

Here we highlight 9 reasons your next TV should be a smart TV.

The complex job of bringing music and control to every room of your house is now being made much simpler, thanks to IP-based distribution systems.

This relatively recent method is revolutionizing home entertainment systems, and can send audio and even video throughout your house with a minimum of fuss, wiring and labor. If you’re considering a distributed audio system for your home, you’ll want to check into this exciting new technology.

IP stands for Internet Protocols, but that doesn’t mean your home music system is now on the Internet (though it can communicate with it easily). Simply put, Internet Protocols are a way of looking at data and the devices that send and receive it. A specific identifying number — called an address — is assigned to each device on the network, which in this case the same home network that carries your broadband, Wi-Fi and other common computing technologies. When data — digital or analog audio — is sent through the network to these devices, it’s broken down into byte-sized (ouch) “packets” of digital information, which are lighter, more manageable and more versatile than full analog audio or video signals.

It’s no secret that the iPad has been a tremendous success for Apple.
What trends are you seeing in the A/V furniture market?

We [continue to] see a breaking away from traditional materials and forms. Cabinets are becoming more shallow due to smaller-sized components. I think the audiovisual furniture market will become more sophisticated and less masculine with lightness of form and finishes.

What are the must-have features for the perfect A/V cabinet?

The obvious answer is functionality, but the piece must be designed without losing a sense of high style. Cable management is critical, but as we move into a wireless world this will become less of an issue. But honestly, a beautifully designed piece of furniture is most important to me.
